Cracker Lake
Glacier National Park, Montana
Trail Name: Cracker Lake
Total Distance: 12.8 miles
Elevation Gain: ~1,700 feet
Route Type: Out & Back
Dog Friendly: No
Cracker Lake is a stunning gem. It is nestled in the Many Glacier Valley Trails system on the east side of Glacier National Park. Surrounded by towering peaks and lush forests, this pristine alpine lake is a remarkable shade of turquoise. The mild-to-moderate hike to reach this hidden gem is an adventure in and of itself. You’ll experience a gentle increase in elevation as you hike through meandering forest trails. We did not see any bears despite a lot of bear scat on the trail, but we did encounter several adorable marmots along the way.

Upon reaching the shores of Cracker Lake, you’ll see towering peaks and bright red rocks clinging to the shoreline. The lake’s striking turquoise color is due to glacial flour – fine particles of rock suspended in the water, refracting sunlight and creating a mesmerizing show of blues that are almost otherworldly. While the bright blue water may appear inviting, the icy temperature will quickly shock you.
Whether you choose to sit quietly by the water’s edge or take a quick refreshing dip on a hot day, you’re bound to leave smiling. There’s something truly magical about disconnecting from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and reconnecting with nature.

Delta Lake
Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming
Trail Name: Delta Lake via Lupine Meadows Access
Total Distance: 7.4 miles
Elevation Gain: ~2,300 feet
Route Type: Out & Back
Dog Friendly: No
When heading to the unforgettable Delta Lake in Grand Teton National Park, I highly recommended getting to the trailhead early. Arriving no later than 5am in the morning ensures that you will have ample time to fully enjoy the awe-inspiring vistas that await along the way without having to dodge crowds of tourists.
The trail leading to Delta Lake is a moderate-to-strenuous hike that spans approximately 7.4 miles round-trip when starting from the Lupine Meadows Access. As you navigate through dense forest that slowly transitions into rocky terrain, keep your eyes peeled for sightings of deer, soaring eagles, grouse, and perhaps even a curious fox or two. You may also be lucky enough to hear the early morning sounds of majestic elk bugling nearby.
As you continue your ascent, the gradient becomes steeper, and the challenge intensifies requiring you to climb over large boulders and scramble up rocky terrain. With the increase in altitude, the panoramic views become more breathtaking, offering a sweeping vista of the surrounding countryside, dotted with rolling hills and picturesque valleys.

The highlight of the journey is undoubtedly the arrival at Delta Lake itself. Nestled among towering peaks, this glacial lake is a sight to behold with its crystal-clear, blue waters reflecting the surrounding mountains. If you’re feeling adventurous, consider taking a dip in the cold waters (unfortunately, it was a bit too chilly the morning we we arrived so we opted out of a swim).
The memories and experiences gained from this hike will undoubtedly stay with you for a lifetime, leaving a special place in your heart for Grand Teton National Park.

Lower, Middle, & Upper Blue Lakes
Uncompahgre National Forest, Colorado
Trail Name: Blue Lakes Trail
Total Distance: 8.7 miles
Elevation Gain: ~2,500 feet
Route Type: Out & Back
Dog Friendly: Yes
Lower, Middle, and Upper Blue Lakes (yes, three lakes in total!) are a hidden paradise located in the heart of the picturesque Uncompahgre National Forest. This enchanting alpine destination offers a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life for hikers and backpackers. Reaching the trailhead requires traversing the rugged County Road 7 in Ridgway, Colorado so you will need to be sure you have a high-clearance, all-wheel-drive vehicle to get there safely.
The trail itself winds its way through dense forests, offering views of the most vibrant wildflowers you will ever see, and perhaps even some curious wildlife along the way. In fact, I had my first encounter with a bear on this trail – a large bear with a golden brown tinge to its fur that, as soon as we spotted each other, quickly retreated down the trail. As always, it is advisable to carry bear spray with you as a precautionary measure. For a full list of my hiking essentials, check out my guide for staying safe in the backcountry.

As you ascend further, the landscape transforms before your eyes. You’ll hear the soothing sounds of rushing streams, adding to the tranquil atmosphere. Upon reaching the Lower Blue Lake, prepare to be amazed by the mesmerizing beauty of the shimmering bright blue waters peaking through the dense evergreens and surrounding wildflowers. You can either choose to turn around at this point or you can continue on to see the Middle and Upper Blue Lakes, venturing deeper into the wilderness and higher in elevation. I highly recommend continuing on to the Upper Blue Lake if you are physically fit to do so.
Whether you are seeking adventure or a connection with nature, this hidden gem is sure to exceed your expectations and leave you with memories to treasure for a lifetime.
