Exploring the great outdoors can be a thrilling experience, but it’s important to remember that nature can be unpredictable. Whether you’re hiking, backpacking, off-roading, dirt biking, or going on some other outdoor adventure, taking the necessary precautions can make all the difference.
To help you out (and as a reminder for myself), I have put together a list of essentials that I always make sure I have for a safe and enjoyable backcountry experience. Pack these items up the night before your adventure so you don’t forget anything the next morning β€Έ
Hydration
Water is essential for any outdoor activity so be sure to bring enough water to stay hydrated throughout your journey. For safe measure, it is recommended to carry at least one-half to one liter of water per hour of physical activity. Remember, the hotter the temperature and the more strenuous the activity, the more water you will need.
When it comes to hydration on the go, in my opinion, there’s no better choice than an Osprey Hydration Pack. With a range of sizes, styles, and colors to choose from, you can find the perfect pack that suits your needs. Each pack comes with a high-quality reservoir that is easy to fill and clean, and is conveniently placed in the pack, making it easy to access and drink from while you’re on the move. I have been using the Raven 10 hydration pack for several years, which has gotten me through a laundry list of double-digit day hikes, paddleboarding adventures, and dirt bike expeditions. The 2.5-liter water reservoir keeps you hydrated, and there are plenty of compartments to store your snacks, tools, and other necessities.
If you’re unsure about the availability of clean water sources and plan on refilling your hydration pack mid-adventure, I highly recommend bringing along a portable water purification system or tablets. REI offers a wide variety of portable water filters, which are compact and easy to transport, allowing you to refill your water reservoir from a nearby stream or river without concern for contaminants. Personally, I always carry the Platypus QuickDraw Microfilter System in my pack just in case I run out of water while I’m out and about.
Fuel
When it comes to food, choose lightweight and nutritious options that can sustain you during your adventure. Granola bars, dried fruits, nuts, and beef jerky are all great choices. You may will also want to pack a lightweight stove, cookware, and utensils if you plan on cooking meals during your trip. When in doubt, always bring more food than you think you’ll need!
Safety
You always want to have a well-stocked first aid kit. This should include items like bandages, antiseptic wipes, adhesive tape, gauze pads, and pain relievers. It’s also a good idea to have basic knowledge of first aid procedures, like how to treat minor cuts, burns, or sprains. I highly recommend taking an American Red Cross first aid safety course to learn the skills necessary to give proper care in case of an emergency – this is useful for everyone, regardless of whether or not you are going on a backcountry adventure.
Additionally, always carry a GPS device to help you navigate and prevent getting lost in the backcountry. Whenever I know I will be in a remote area, I carry the Garmin inReach Mini, a lightweight and compact satellite communicator that allows for two-way messaging with your loved ones, location tracking and sharing, and SOS alerts to send for help (keep in mind it does need a monthly paid subscription service, but it is well worth the small fee for the peace of mind). I also wear the Garmin Fenix 5S GPS smartwatch, which has a built-in compass, barometric altimeter, and navigation functions. This watch also lets you ping friends and family when you start an activity so they can follow you along your route; however, this feature does need cell service to work.
Regardless of which device you choose to bring with you, always familiarize yourself with the area you will be exploring and plan your route accordingly. It is also best practice to inform someone of your plans and expected time frame – that way, if something goes wrong and you don’t return as scheduled, rescuers will have a solid idea on where to start the search for you.
Lastly, do not forget your bear spray (a specialized form of pepper spray that is specifically designed to deter bears during a close encounter). As you venture into bear country, it’s important to remember that these magnificent creatures are a vital part of our ecosystem. While encounters with bears are relatively rare, it’s crucial to take precautions to guarantee your safety as well as the safety of the bears. Research how to use the spray properly and do not use your bear spray unless absolutely necessary! Remember, you are in their home.
Attire
Clothing and proper gear are crucial for outdoor adventures. Make sure to wear layers that can be easily removed or added depending on the weather conditions. A waterproof jacket or poncho, sturdy hiking boots, and a hat are also essential. Don’t forget sunglasses to protect your eyes from the sun’s harmful rays.
By adhering to these guidelines and being adequately prepared, you can enjoy your outdoor adventures with peace of mind, knowing that you are ready for any situation that may arise. Stay safe and have fun exploring the great outdoors!
